Personalized Hangers
I've seen these lovely hangers everywhere and thought what a great idea. But instead of paying $30 for each why not make them myself. Which is what I did.
- First I bought 12 gauge aluminum jewelry wire at Michaels with my 50% coupons, I went like 3 times in one day to buy the wire. They have different colors available, I bought silver and pink, 2 of the silver and 1 of the pink.
- Second I bought the hangers, we have this great store called Dollarama (dollar store), seriously I love that store. I took out the wooden bar making sure to take out the nails if left behind. FI helped me with this part because every time I pulled the wooden bar out the nail stayed behind. lol (sorry I didn't take a picture of the hangers as they came)
- Third, I used my FI's needle nose pliers to help with bending and shaping the letters. Seriously though, I think I used it maybe 3-4 times, I used my fingers for all of it, I found a lot easier.
- Fourth, now that I have my tools ready, I went on Word to create the names using a font size, type that I liked. I made it big so I can use it to give me an idea of the size and shapes I wanted to make the names with the wire.
- Fifth, I started with the silver wire, leaving about 8inches on the side, I started molding the letters with my fingers, referring to the print out of the names to guide me. I used the hanger as well to see how the name size would look if attached. I used batteries, marker cap to round off the loops in the names. Once all my names were done I lay them down on a flat surface and adjusted as needed. I originally had done the Bride in the silver wire, but changed my mine and did in pink.
- Sixth, I asked FI to help me with this part. But before he did, I added the little swirls on every name. He drilled the hangers, a hole big enough to fit the wire, we didn't need glue, but if you want to make sure it's really secure, use E600 glue when inserting the wire into the hanger. We didn't need glue because the hole my FI drilled is just the perfect size, these will not be coming off unless you really pull on them.
- Seventh, I hand painted the wedding date on the girls hangers with some little flowers. I already had the paint on hand from my other DIY project (hand painted glasses for the bridal party). On mine, I will get a ribbon bow to put around the top.
So my total for all my hangers: Wire: $6.75, Hangers: ~$3.00, Paint: Free, needle nose pliers: Free, Bow: probably $1.50 = for a grand total of: ~$12.00 for 5 hangers! I think it's pretty good specially for someone on a budget.
And Voilà! My own DIY hangers.
Now I found it really easy to do, but if you're unsure, just use a little piece of wire and play with it, see what works best for you. I hope this is able to help someone else who would like to do these.
